WOOD RIVER, IL. (KTVI) – A steam release, to relieve pressure at the Wood River Refinery, caused some frayed nerves for some residents near the refinery Thursday night.

Originally, it was reported that a loud boom came from the plant, having residents thinking that a sonic boom had occurred at the refinery, possibly an explosion.

But officials at the Conoco Phillips Refinery in Wood River, have stated that the noise was only steam being let off from the plant to relieve some pressure.
