DARDENNE PRAIRIE, MO (KTVI) -A deadly home invasion happened Wednesday night St. Charles County. It and wound up with the homeowner shooting and killing an intruder.

St. Charles County Sheriff`s Department investigators are calling the break in totally random and the actions of the homeowner justified.

The suspect who was shot and killed by the homeowner is identified by police as 20-year-old William Carlton of St. Charles.

Investigators say the home invasion happened around nine last night at a home on Du Vall Court just off Feise Road in Dardenne Prairie.

Detectives say a 65 year old man and his 56 year old wife were sitting downstairs watching TV when they saw Carlton peering in through their french doors.

Then police say Carlton threw a landscaping brick through the doors and barged into the home.
We`re told the couple tried to run upstairs but Carlton started assaulting them.

The husband was somehow able to break away and go get a .38 caliber handgun from another part of the home.

Investigators say he returned and warned Carlton to stop the attack but Carlton refused.

The husband then fired a shot hitting Carlton in the chest.

Carlton was transported to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Police have not been to figure out any motive for the home invasion.

‘At this point in time it appears to be a totally random occurrence. The house was not selected out for any particular reason that we know of. We`re still investigating that but at this time it just appears to be a random incident…This is a normally quiet neighborhood. We never have any issues out there in this particular neighborhood,’ said Lieutenant David Tiefenbrunn with the St. Charles County Sheriff`s Department.

The couple was shaken up but not seriously hurt.

They were not transported to any hospital.

Police say as a matter of routine they will present their evidence to the prosecuting attorney but at this point the homeowner is not facing any charges.
