ST. LOUIS COUNTY, MO (KTVI) – For the first time since the 1990s, Missouri voters have returned an Ashcroft to statewide elected office. According to Associated Press projections Tuesday, Jay Ashcroft has won the race to be the next Secretary of State.
It’s the first win at the ballot box for the Republican Ashcroft, an attorney who lost a 2014 bid for a State Senate seat. His father, John, is a former Missouri Attorney General, Auditor, Governor and U.S. Senator. Jay Ashcroft defeated Robin Smith, the longtime St. Louis television news anchor who announced her intention to run as a Democrat not long after retiring from KMOV last year.
The candidates disagreed over the need for Voter ID. Ashcroft supported a constitutional amendment that also appeared on the November ballot, while Smith opposed it.
Incumbent Jason Kander opted to run for the U.S. Senate instead of seeking a second term.
