HILLSBORO, MO (KTVI) – A Jefferson County father is in custody after being accused in the death of his infant son. Cody Bunch, 21, has been charged with one count of Abuse of a Child-Resulting in Death.
On January 6th Festus Police were dispatched to the Oak Knoll Apartments located off of YMCA Drive. A 3-month-old boy was not breathing. The child was transported to Mercy Jefferson and then flown to Children`s hospital in St. Louis for treatment. Festus police requested that the Jefferson County Sheriffs Office investigate.
“Through the course of the investigation we determined that there was some head trauma. We questioned the last to people to have custody, the mother and father.” said Lt. Sgt. Jim Kausler of the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department.
Police say they were informed by doctors that the child was suffering from a severe brain injury caused by trauma and died Saturday January 10th. Cody Bunch was questioned and told police his side of the story. Bunch told police he fell when he was getting out of a chair with his son cradled in his arms.
“There was more than one injury that he wasn’t telling us about.” said Lt. Sgt. Jim Kausler of the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department.
In fact, investigators say they found seven contusions inside Aiden’s scalp to the back of the head including severe bruising in the middle of his head. Police found no bruising to the father`s body. We spoke with neighbors in the Oak Knoll apartments. They say Bunch just lost his job three weeks ago and was unemployed.
We tried speaking to the family`s aunt. She said that she didn’t want to go on camera and that this has been a nightmare for her family. Bunch is being held here at the Jefferson County Jail with one count of abuse of a child-resulting in death. His bond is set at $500,000.
