Jefferson County SWAT Officer shot; suspect dead after ‘hours’ long shootout with authorities

ST. LOUIS–The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office confirmed early Saturday morning that a suspect was dead after what was described as a period of hours where the suspect exchanged gunfire with SWAT officers. One officer was shot, sustaining lower extremity injuries.

SWAT officers were executing a search warrant in the 8000 block of Lake Drive in Cedar Hill as part of a missing persons investigation connected to a homicide case. Sheriff Dave Marshak said SWAT members were on scene gathering intelligence for a period of time without the suspect’s knowledge. When the suspect became aware of the law enforcement presence, the suspect shot at authorities , prompting the exchange of gunfire.

The SWAT officer was shot at approximately 10:45pm Friday night, Marshak said.

This dangerous situation carried on for about an hour before the Deputy was shot and it continued afterward. The suspect was involved in multiple exhanges of gunfire with law enforcement and was hit and ultimately died from a fatal gunshot wound.

The Deputy was taken to an area hospital where he underwent emergency surgery. The extent of his injuries is unknown; however, they are not expected to be life threatening.

The suspect was known to law enforcement, Marshak said, with a lengthy history. He described the officer who was shot as “a seasoned police officer. He’s one of our best….if anybody can pull through, I think he’s going to be fine.”

Marshak was with the officer prior to surgery at a local hospital.

The investigation at the scene is ongoing.
