ST. LOUIS COUNTY, MO (KTVI) – The owner of a popular University City dessert retailer stands accused of racial discrimination by a former employee.
The employee, 29-year-old Shayden Frazier, filed a lawsuit in St. Louis County Circuit Court on Monday, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported.
Frazier worked at Jilly’s Cupcake Bar from August 2013 to July 2014. In the lawsuit, Frazier said he informed bakery owner Jill Segal that a white employee used a racial slur in reference to a black co-worker. According to the suit, a staff meeting took place later that day. Frazier told Segal he felt uncomfortable after the meeting and was sent home. When Frazier came back to work a few days later, he was fired.
The white employee who used the racial slur was not disciplined or fired, the suit argues.
Frazier also claimed Jilly’s maintained different standards for appearance and attendance between black and white employees.
The Post-Dispatch was unable to reach Segal for a response to the lawsuit.
Frazier’s attorney, Javad Khazaeli, said a separate lawsuit filed in February 2015 on behalf of an African-American woman alleges Segal ignored claims of racial and sexual harassment.
