ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI) - House Speaker John Boehner spent Friday in St. Louis.  He spent lunchtime enjoying ribs at Pappy’s Smokehouse.  Perhaps he needed a hardy meal before discussing hot-button issues with local business leaders and politicians; the real reason for his trip to the Midwest.

On Friday night, he attended a private fundraiser at the home of former gubernatorial candidate, Dave Spence.  Missouri Congresswoman Ann Wagner, along with other House Republicans, co-hosted the event.  The fundraiser included a roundtable discussion and reception.  Wagner explains, “Energy policy, education, I think those are the things on people’s minds. Healthcare, and most importantly, and of the greatest news today, will be the Benghazi select committee.”

Just hours before this fundraiser, Boehner announced the formation of a select committee to further investigate the deadly 2012 attack in Benghazi, Libya, that left the U.S. ambassador and three other Americans dead.  The announcement of this committee comes just days after a conservative watchdog group obtained emails that could shed light on controversial statements made after the attack. Wagner says, “Finally we have emails that are tying the White House directly to what looks like a political motive in trying to either lead or mislead then-Secretary Susan Rice in her discussion about the Benghazi issue.”

However, the Administration feels this new investigation is just an election year ploy.  State Department Deputy Spokesperson Marie Harf says, “This is just another attempt to use this politically. And that's not how we should talk about Benghazi. I know that sounds Pollyanna-ish standing up here, but it’s how people in this building feel. It’s how people on the ground feel.”

According to Wagner, Boehner will release more details on a timetable for this committee, and who might be involved, sometime next week.  FOX 2 reached out to Boehner’s office Friday, but he was unavailable for comment.
