Kirkwood hit-and-run suspect arrested for van matching accident video

KIRKWOOD, MO (KTVI) - Police have made an arrest in a hit-and-run from February. Omar Vazquez, 43, is accused of driving the vehicle that struck Joseph Auffenberg on the 400 block of Kirkwood road. According to a release Kirkwood police say they found the two-tone minivan that hit Auffenberg on Thursday. They say the vehicle has damage to the headlight and hood consistent with the accident. Vazquez is the registered owner of that vehicle.

Kirkwood police say they logged hundreds of hours of work during the investigation. According to a release from the department they eliminated 95% of the 5,100 Ford minivans registered in the St Louis area and surrounding counties areas. The sorted them by model and paint scheme comparison to case evidence and video. Officers also inspected 235 vans of similar make, model, and paint scheme from as far away as Pulaski County, Missouri, during the five week investigation.

Vazquez is being charged with leaving the scene of an accident. He is being held at St Louis County Jail and held on $10,000 bond.
