ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI)- There could be major traffic headaches for drivers heading downtown this weekend.

MoDOT completely closed Interstate 44 between Kingshighway Boulevard and Jefferson Avenue in both directions  at 8pm Friday night. The closures include the ramp from northbound I-55 onto westbound I-44. Everything on I-44 is set to reopen by 5am  Monday morning.

Crews are going to remove the driving surface on the Compton Avenue bridge that sits over I-44.

Drivers need to plan for an alternation route. Detours around the I-44 shutdown include Kingshighway, I-64, and Jefferson.

Note that Compton between both Lafayette and Russell Avenue will remain closed after I-44 reopens, local traffic will still be able to get to their residences. Repairs to the Compton Avenue overpass are slated to be complete by December 15th. The revamped bridge will have two 14 foot lanes along with six foot sidewalks.
