SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) _ Illinois House lawmakers are considering a proposed school funding formula that would direct more state money to poorer rural districts at the expense of wealthier suburban Chicago ones.
The issue is being discussed at a Tuesday afternoon hearing in Springfield. Earlier in the day, proponents of the funding overhaul held a rally at the state Capitol.
The legislation would change Illinois’ dated school funding formula. Over the years there’s been widespread agreement the formula should be altered, but disagreement over how.
The fate of the legislation hinges on educational equity for students and the efficient use of tax dollars.
Opponents say the plan unfairly penalizes districts able to spend more money on students because of rich property tax bases.
The legislation is SB16.
