ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI) - Renovation work on the Downtown Archgrounds kicks off Thursday with a celebration and some street closures.

Organizers will celebrate with a groundbreaking around lunchtime Thursday.  That means Lenor K. Sullivan will shut down around mid-morning.

It is all for a rebuild of Lenor K. Sullivan into the Central Riverfront Project. The street will be elevated to help avoid flooding, contractors will upgrade the streetscape and build a walkway and separated bike lanes.

The new Lenor K. Sullivan should eventually become a 1.5 mile long corridor to accommodate cars, buses, bicycles and even pedestrians with special needs.

First, organizers of Thursday's event will have Lenor K. Sullivan shut down between the levee parking lot near Chouteau on the south of the Archgrounds to Washington Avenue on the north.
