ST. LOUIS (KTVI) - As the school year begins, police are reminding parents about a free safety device to protect their children at home or when visiting a friend’s home.

The Sunset Hills Police Department is one of several local departments providing free gun locks. The locks are available under the U.S. Department of Justice’s “Projects Safe Neighborhoods” program.

Sunset Hills has offered the free gun locks for some time, but authorities stress the beginning of the school year is a good time to think about safety.

In some instances, children encounter guns stashed away at their home.

“Some people will hide them where they think no one else will find them. Or their children won’t find them,” Sunset Hills Sgt. Robbie Hagen said. “Children are very resourceful. And they know things about their own homes sometimes that we as parents and grandparents Don’t realize they know.”

Anyone requesting a lock does not have to provide identification nor a reason for needing the lock, Hagen said.
