LINCOLN COUNTY, MO (KTVI) – A 25-year-old Olney, Missouri man is behind bars after allegedly striking his girlfriend while the two were in a moving vehicle and later a hit and run collision.

According to a spokesman for the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to the intersection of Ridge Road and Highway KK around 4 p.m. Thursday for a collision. The victim at the scene said a small, tan-colored car t-boned his vehicle at the intersection and fled the scene.

While this was happening, a deputy stationed on Walker Road clocked a vehicle speeding at 66 miles per hour in a 30MPH zone. The deputy pulled the vehicle over, which turned out to be the car that fled the aforementioned collision.

The man behind the wheel of the car, identified as Zachary Turkington, was driving with a revoked driver’s license. The deputy detected alcohol on Turkington’s breath and administered a roadside sobriety test, which Turkington failed. Turkington told the deputy he drank a pint of vodka earlier that day.

While examining the vehicle, the deputy saw an 11-month-old child in the backseat. Turkington was placed under arrest and the child was taken into protective custody.

Over the course of their investigation, deputies learned Turkington was riding in the passenger seat of the small, tan-colored car when he got into an argument with the female driver. Turkington ordered the woman to pull over and to get out the car. When the woman refused, Turkington allegedly started punching her in the head.

The woman stopped the car and tried to get out when Turkington pulled her back in the vehicle. A passerby pulled up and asked if the woman needed help, at which point Turkington moved into the driver’s seat and drove away.

Turkington was charged with leaving the scene of an accident, endangering the welfare of a child, domestic assault, and driving while intoxicated as a prior offender. He remains in custody at Lincoln County Jail on a $50,000 cash-only bond.
