Man charged with murder for body found in Horseshoe Lake

COLLINSVILLE, IL (KTVI) – A man has been charged with murder in connection to a body found in Horseshoe lake.  Police say Scott Thompson, 42, murdered Dakota C. Jones, age 20, of Cahokia, Illinois.    The body was found floating in the north shore area of Horseshoe Lake State Park Sunday.

Madison County police say Thompson and Jones met earlier that night in East St. Louis. Thompson was giving Jones a ride to meet a friend at around 10:30pm. Police believe that Thompson beat Jones in the the head with a blunt object and then put his body in the lake.

Thompson is on parole for a  1989 St. Clair County murder.  He has been out of prison since February 2013.  He was arrested on Sunday at his home in Centreville. He remains in custody in Belleville, but will eventually be brought to the Madison County Jail in Edwardsville where he will be held without bond.

If convicted of murder, Thompson will face 20-60 years in prison.  He will be required to serve 100% of the sentence.

Thompson is now in the St. Clair County jail with no bond.  He is being charged with charged with two counts of first degree murder.
