Theft suspect shot in shoulder by officer near Festus

FESTUS, Mo. – A theft suspect was shot in the shoulder by an officer after 8am just south of Festus, Missouri. The shooting happened in the 12000 block of Highway TT at an abandoned nursing home.

Officers were called to the area for a report of a burglary at the former Benchmark Healthcare building. They did not see anyone suspicious in the area. Construction workers later spotted someone inside. They flagged down a deputy who was driving by.

Police say a man came out of the building carrying something. When the deputy ordered the man to put the object down he lunged at the officer. There was a struggle that involved the suspect trying to grab the officer’s weapon. The gun went off at least one time. The suspect was hit in the shoulder area.

The suspect a 30-year-old man from Crystal City, Missouri. He was talking and alert when he was taken from the scene.

Sheriff Dave Marshak says in a tweet that the officer has minor injuries after the struggle. That officer has been on the force for 15-years.

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s office is still investigating the shooting. The extent of the man’s injuries are not known at this time. He was taken to the hospital.
