ST. LOUIS (KTVI) – A 56-year old man is in police custody after fatally wounding his brother in an attempt to stop him from attacking a woman with a hammer.

According to a spokesperson for the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department, the incident occurred around 11:45 p.m. Thursday at a residence in the 5800 block of De Giverville Avenue, located in the Skinker DeBaliviere neighborhood.

When police arrived at the scene, they found 48-year old Gary Peters suffering from a gunshot wound to the stomach. Peters was taken to the hospital but was pronounced dead a short time later.

A woman at the scene, who identified herself as Peters’ girlfriend, said the two of them were at the house with Peters’ brother. The woman said Peters attacked her with a hammer and his brother tried to intervene.

Peters allegedly attacked his own brother with the hammer and that’s when the brother retrieved his handgun.

The woman was taken to the hospital to be treated for blunt force trauma injuries to the head. She was said to be in stable condition.

Police said the investigation remains ongoing. No charges have been filed thus far.
