UNION COUNTY, IL (KFVS) - An Illinois man says his hobby suddenly turned into a police investigation.

Authorities thought he might be making meth but it was actually just maple syrup. Neighbors called police after seeing an odd setup of tubes and buckets on the property in Union County.

So the Bensons gladly showed the officers what was really going on.

"They pointed out to the trees and the buckets and I told them my husband has a hobby of making maple syrup and that's what we were doing.  Of course they realized that after they seen it."

The Bensons have been making their own maple syrup for five years. But it's the first time they've been mistaken for running a criminal operation. The couple gave drug agents a sample of their syrup to take home and enjoy.
