MAPLEWOOD, MO (KTVI)– How far has our nation come in half a decade?
Juniors taking 20th Century Studies at Maplewood Richmond Heights High School watched both the President Barack Obama`s speech and Dr. Martin Luther King’s Wednesday.
First they took a look at the 17 minute speech delivered by Dr. King 50 years ago.
They discussed it and then watched Wednesday event`s in Washington unfold. Many of these students` parents were not even alive during the March on Washington. It`s interesting to hear their perspective on how far America has progressed since the historic day in 1963, and they contemplate if the dream has been achieved.
As for areas of improvement, the students talked about people respecting each other, an example: one African American teen told me just the other day he and his mom were in the car when some white guys passed them yelling the ‘n’ word at them. So there is work that needs to be done before the dream is a complete reality.
