CAHOKIA, IL (KTVI) - Three criminals used high-powered weapons, including an assault rifle, to rob a small business in Cahokia.
It happened around 4:15 Thursday afternoon at Alps grocery store.
In the surveillance footage, which Cahokia police released on Friday, you can see three men wearing ski masks, heading into the store. Two head right for the safe in the back, while one heads for the cash register.
The man at the register points a hand gun with an extended, 30-round magazine at the clerk, and then snatches cash from the drawer. He appears to be wearing royal blue sneakers.
Meanwhile, a second store clerk was just walking out of the back room when she was stopped by the two armed men.
One was carrying what looks like an AK47 assault rifle. She's praying while they open the unlocked safe and steal wads of cash.
Neither employee was harmed, and no customers were in the store. The men got away.
FOX 2 spoke with one shopper who barely missed them. She comes to Alps every day after work. She says, "I'm just glad I wasn't here, that's all. I just got off the bus like I did just now, and walked over here and saw a lot of police cars out here, and I was like, why are they out here, what's wrong?"
Cahokia Police Lt. Dennis Plew says, "It's a very brazen act, in the middle of the day, to come into a store that obviously they were watching to know that nobody was in there, it seemed like they knew right where to go."
Cahokia investigators hope fingerprints from the safe will generate some leads. They also want people to look closely at the surveillance footage.
Plew explains, "Maybe there's something in a jacket or a pair of shoes, maybe people are talking or there's something on social media."
If you have any information, call Cahokia police or Crime Stoppers.
