Metro East Couple Dies In Crash

EAST ALTON, IL (KTVI)– A Bethalto, Illinois couple is dead after an accident in East Alton late Friday morning.

Authorities said the driver of a gold 2002 Windstar SE van was traveling eastbound on Route 143, near the Wood River Creek.

The driver of a 2008 white Silverado Truck traveling westbound on Route 143 was attempting to turn left into a parking area on the south side of Route 143.

The driver of a Gold 2005 Honda CRV struck the rear of the truck causing the truck to travel into the path of van. The truck and van collided head on in the eastbound lanes of Route 143.

The driver of the van, 80-year-old Leonard McCormick, was pronounced dead at the scene.

McCormick suffered traumatic blunt head and chest trauma from the crash.

The passenger of the van was identified as his wife Shirley McCormick. Shirley McCormick was airlifted from the scene to Barnes Hospital where she was later pronounced dead.

The driver of the truck and the driver of the other vehicle were transported to an area hospital. The conditions of the two victims are not known at this time.

 The crash remains under investigation by the East Alton Police Department.

 Funeral arrangements are pending at Elias Kallal & Schaaf Funeral Home in Bethalto, IL.
