ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI) - Jakeem Brown is a 5-year-old that watched his mother's murder. All he knows is, the bad guys did it, and police agree.

It was the night of August 13th. His mom, 24 year-old Whitney Brown was with a group of friends standing in front of a house at Shulte and Mimika. Among them was Devon Fletcher. Around midnight, a gold or tan Chevy Silverado drove by and someone inside fired several shots at the house. Brown and Fletcher were the only ones struck and killed. Police don`t believe they were the intended targets.

"They weren't out there in the streets. They weren't out there being criminals or living that lifestyle. They were out there talking to a friend in the middle of the street." said Lt. John Paul Green.

Jakeen was fortunately inside Whitney's car. While that too was riddled with bullets, he was not hit. His grandmother, Erica, now cares for him.

"I can say that I really know officially know what it feels to lose a child," says his Grandmother Erica Jones. "I can officially say that. And it`s hard. And I have to raise him now. I went from being a Nana to being a mother again."

Whitney was studying to be a nurse. Fletcher, her friend from high school lived nearby the scene. Fletcher's family is also in shock.

"This didn`t have to happen so you always play the 'what if' game," says older brother Calvin Fletcher". "What if he didn`t go around the corner? What if was in the house? He was talking to his friends about going to play pool. And they were taking too long to make a decision. He gets a phone call. Goes across the street. 10 minutes later he`s fighting for his life on the ground."

Fletcher also leaves behind a child, a daughter who was just 3-weeks-old at the time. His family also wants justice.

"I think it will bring closure," said Calvin. "It`ll never bring him back but to know that the people that committed this crime cant` do it again it`ll bring some sort of peace to my family. But in the long run, Devon will never see his daughter, you know? He won`t be here to celebrate her first birthday"

CrimeStoppers is offering up to a $5,000 reward for info leading to an arrest. Jakeem wants them caught because he doesn't want the bad guys to hurt someone else's family.

"Somebody lost their life. Two people lost they life," says Erica. "Two families are devastated. Two children have to grow up without their parent. Devon Fletcher child has to grow up with him. And my grandson has to grow up without her."

If you know who pulled that trigger, call Crimestoppers at 1-866-371-TIPS. Your call is completely anonymous. You don't even have to reveal your identity to claim your reward. The killers will never know it was you. The reward stands at $5,000 but Erica along with a non profit have set up a Go Fund Me account to match the reward. If you'd like to help, the link is,
