ST. LOUIS (KTVI) – Missouri State Representative Mike Moon, (R) Ash Grove, is calling for a special legislative session to address the Syrian refugee crisis. Moon believes the refugees should be held in camps in other countries. He sent letters to Governor Jay Nixon and House Speaker Todd Richardson with his request.
“This is something that is completely, so vile, so disturbing so un-American,” said Faizan Syed, Executive Director of the St. Louis Chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations.
He says Moon’s position brings back memories of the internment of Japanese-Americans during World War II.
“Does this lawmaker want families who have been through a war, been living in camps and put them in these things?” asked Syed. “That’s unacceptable.”
Moon’s staff told us he was unavailable for an interview, but sent us a copy of the letters stating the lawmaker’s position.
The letter reads in part, “If my information is correct, Afghan refugees sent to Pakistani and Iranian refugee camps returned to their homeland when it was safe to do so. I see no reason not to follow that example because once they’re on U.S. soil they’d have no reason to leave.”
Governor Jay Nixon repeated his support for welcoming refugees during a press briefing following a visit to a St. Louis school.
“We are taking care of people in a very unfortunate situation,” said Nixon.
Syed believes support for the terrorist group ISIS will only increase if American fears of Syrian refugees grow.
“That way American Muslims will feel they are unwelcome in this country, and they’ll be more prone to this type of extremist rhetoric,” said Syed.
He said the screening process for refugees is rigorous. Here is a link to a Wall Street Journal report outlining that process.
