FESTUS, MO (KTVI) - All US combat forces will be out of Afghanistan by the end of 2014. But, a Missouri National Guard unit is just getting ready to deploy.

Their job is a crucial part of the draw down of forces. They'll be doing what's called deconstruction. That's exactly what it sounds like. They will be going in and tearing down many of the bases and structures that have been established over the past 13 years of war. The goal is to leave Afghanistan looking better now than it was when our troops arrived more than a decade ago.

Families we spoke to are sad to see their loved ones leave, but proud of their work and looking forward to their safe return.
