ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Firefighters rushed to what used to be the Kennerly-Maffitt Apartments in north St. Louis this morning after getting a fire call at that location. When they arrived just about 7:30 am they found flames shooting out of a second-story window.
Crews searched the building at Maffitt and Newstead but found no one inside. They quickly contained the fire to just the one unit and put out the flames.
Authorities say both apartment buildings that were part of that complex are vacant and there is not supposed to be anyone in them. There are boards up over parts of the buildings.
Fire officials think a homeless person might have gotten inside and was either cooking something or trying to stay warm. There could have also been multiple people inside as well.
No injuries were reported and an exact cause is still under investigation.
