ST. LOUIS – A fire at an apartment building for the elderly leaves claimed a woman’s life.
St. Louis firefighters responded to a two-alarm fire in the Central West End around 3:45 p.m. on Monday. The fire occurred in the 4300 block of Forest Park Avenue.
Firefighters arrived quickly; their firehouse is just down the street.
The fire was contained to a first-floor unit. The resident, who suffered serious health problems, died later at the hospital.
The entire building was evacuated. Residents said they helped their wheelchair-bound neighbors make their way down the steps from the fourth floor.
Bomb and arson crews, along with fire investigators, have been searching the apartment for possible clues to the cause of the blaze. They have not yet determined a cause but they said they did not see anything suspicious.
The woman who died was described as a lovely, kind person. Her name and age have not yet been released.
