ST. LOUIS – Two people were shot amid rapid gunfire in St. Louis’ Downtown West neighborhood early Wednesday morning.

The shooting happened around 12:30 a.m. near the intersection of North 20th Street and Washington Avenue.

Investigators say someone shot a woman in the chest. Someone in her car then drove half a mile to the police central patrol division on Jefferson Avenue to get help. While that driver got away, another man was shot in the foot.

Police say two groups began shooting at each other after an argument.

Police recovered three weapons, drugs and drug-making materials from the area. Police found dozens of shell casings from the scene, and investigators say possibly more than 100 shots were fired. The shooting led to damaged and shattered windows at one person’s apartment complex and a nearby dental office.

Two people, including a 17-year-old boy, are in custody in connection with the shooting. Another suspect, a 23-year-old man, told responding officers he had feared for his safety and fired back in response to shots fired.

Injuries from the incident do not appear to be life-threatening, though both of the victims shot were taken to a hospital for treatment. The St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department is handling the investigation.
