CHESTERFIELD, MO. (KTVI) – A disappointing day for Mizzou football fans but not an entirely discouraging one.  Supporters watched with pride as the Tigers competed in the Atlanta Dome for the SEC championship against the Auburn Tigers.  The Missouri team struggled last year in its first year in the SEC.  This year it roared back winning the SEC East and the right to play for the SEC crown.

Auburn won the battle 59 to 42 with a powerful running game.  “Obviously defense was a little lacking but who would have thought we’d score 42 points and not win,” said one long time MU fan.

Another fan, a recent MU graduate, said the football season “changes the whole face of Mizzou…second year in the SEC, I think it is great.  I think it will do a lot for our school.”

The afternoon game Saturday brought wall to wall crowds to local sports bars.  “I’ve been waiting for a game like this for probably ten years,” said the mother of a current student.  “They are kind of the Cinderella story for me,” she explained adding, “I’m rooting for them because it is great for the school, great for Missouri and great for the Midwest.”

Another fan who admires the team’s resiliency admitted he had given up on MU Football Coach Gary Pinkel last year.  “It is kind of heart-warming, I guess.  I’m happy for them,” he said as he watched them play.

“It was wonderful to see Missouri really take strides in their program and what they were doing but unfortunately we just didn’t close the deal today,” said a fan who watched the game in Chesterfield.

One Auburn fan braved the Mizzou territory wearing the school’s vivid burnt orange color while he watched the game unfold.  “It was a good game and offenses were going at it. Auburn came out ahead.”

Another Mizzou parent predicted the game for the SEC championship will boost Mizzou’s recruiting appeal across the south and in Texas for years to come.  He admitted feeling disappointed but also proud.  “They had a great season when nobody expected them to ever be the SEC champion..wow what a season.”

Mizzou did win one SEC championship this year; the women’s volleyball team seized the victory.
