ST. LOUIS (KTVI) - It was a long ride home for some Wednesday night commuters.  A quick blast of snow coupled with dropping temperatures caused some roads to glaze.

Drivers on Interstate 70 in the St. Charles area experienced delays.  There were accidents on I-55.  A long line of cars waited to travel from Highway 141 to Page Avenue.  Traffic came to a halt at the Earth City Expressway and I-70.

MoDOT deployed 200 trucks.  Workers initially spread salt brine but switched to rock salt and beet juice as the temperatures dropped.

"We'll keep the crews out as long as we need to," said MoDOT's Becky Allmeroth.   "We're expecting things to be in really great shape by the morning rush hour."

MoDOT said a big challenge was keeping up with the dropping temperatures. Allmeroth said the surface temperature in Festus was 50 degrees while at the same time surface temperatures in St. Charles were 32 degrees.
