VERSAILLES, Mo. (AP) _ A former secretary for the Morgan County Sheriff’s office is charged with stealing nearly $18,000 from the office.

The sheriff said in a news release Monday that 45-year-old Tami Davis was arrested at her home in Versailles Friday and charged with seven counts of felony stealing.

KOMU reports Davis had a key to the lock box where the jail kept bond money and $17,862 was taken from 53 cash bonds. Detectives say Davis was using reimbursement money to pad the sheriff’s office’s bank account and repay the court, while accruing debt with the county treasurer.

Court documents say the sheriff’s office doesn’t have enough money to pay the treasurer the $12,443 it owes because of the theft.

Online court documents do not show that Davis has an attorney.
