ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI) - A very sad and disturbing murder is under investigation tonight by St. Louis County detectives. A mother,  Brittany Jefferson, 25, was shot to death in front of her four young children.

Homicide detectives are at police headquarters are working the case. Some of the information I have is coming from officers some from neighbors. It is a tragic story.

They are describing the killer as a monster here in the Oak Park Apartments in North County. Police say the call went out around midnight.

"The call came out as burglary in progress. The reason it came out that way the suspect forced himself in the door by kicking it open." said St. Louis County Police Officer Shawn McGuire.

The door has since been replaced. The crime quickly turned into a homicide when neighbors say the gunman shot the woman to death in front of her four children described as 3 months to 11 years old. The murder scene got even sadder when one child tried to comfort his mom`s lifeless body.

"The six year old was over the mom`s body trying to hug her and pull her up." said neighbor Tori Adams.

Residents report hearing five or six gunshots. Police say the woman`s boyfriend is cooperating, he came home just after police showed up.  They don`t know if there is a relationship between the killer and the victim.

Residents say the woman`s 11 year old child ran from the apartment with the gunman in pursuit.

"We seen the little boy running, and we saw some shots fired at the little boy." said neighbor Joshua Joyner.

Fortunately that child and the other siblings were not physically hurt.
