FAIRVIEW HEIGHTS, IL (KTVI) –  Over in Illinois traffic moved at a crawl during rush hour as snow and freezing drizzle fell on roadways. IDOT was out clearing roads and laying down salt to keep roads from glazing over.

Still problems did pop-up with vehicles sliding off roads and slicks spots on some roads.

A problem of a different sort hampered firefighters that battled a house fire of Highway 15 near the Our Lady of the Snows Shrine. Firefighters had to battle dropping temperature while trying to save a house that Lamont Nelson has been in for 60 years.

The Nelson family wasn’t home when the fire started, so no one was injured in the blaze. But the family has lost everything.

The Red Cross has been called in to assist the family with shelter and clothing.
