CALLAWAY COUNTY, MO (KTVI) – Two people were killed Tuesday morning in a seven vehicle pileup on eastbound Interstate 70 at the Kingdom City exit, the Missouri State Highway Patrol said.

According to state police, the accident occurred at 9:15 a.m. at mile marker 147.8, a busy stretch of the interstate. Authorities said at least one vehicle crossed over the wire cable in the median from westbound 70. It appeared two tractor-trailers collided head-on. One other tractor trailer, three pick-ups, and an SUV were also involved in the accident.

There was a light rain falling at the time of the accident.

Five persons were injured and taken to University Hospital in Columbia, Missouri.  Robert Brainerd and Charles Moore, both 46, were pronounced dead at the scene.

The Missouri Highway Patrol’s Major Crash Unit spent much of the day collecting evidence and documenting the accident scene in an effort to identify the probable contributing circumstances.

“There’s just a lot of traffic that travels on I-70. It’s somewhat of a narrow roadway, but I think any driver who uses common sense and good safe practices will find the interstate is safe,” Missouri State Highway Patrol Sergeant Scott White said.
