ST. LOUIS (KTVI) – St. Louis police have identified the body of a shooting victim found dead Monday in a vacant lot in the Wells-Goodfellow neighborhood.

Investigators said 21-year-old Tyrin Willaims, standout basketball player at Riverview Gardens High School, was shot multiple times. His body was discovered in the 5800 block of Terry Avenue.

Tyrin’s parents, Rhonda and Timothy Williams, said they’re devastated.

"Black lives have to matter to us. We have to care about us,” Rhonda said. “If we don't care about us, nobody else will. The community has to step up and do their part, we can’t be afraid."

Family members said Tyrin was just accepted to Harris Stowe State University on a full-ride scholarship. The college bound athlete was looking forward to getting his college and basketball career back on track and preparing for the fall semester. Williams was also named the 2013 Suburban North Conference player of the year. His coach and friend, Darryl Lenard, said he played with a lot of heart and love for the game.

"It was an honor for me to coach him because he had passion and leadership skills and desire to be a leader and winner,” Lenard said.
