ST. LANDRY PARISH, LA (NBC33) — Troopers are currently investigating a bizarre officer-involved shooting incident that began with a traffic crash and ended with a naked man being tased.

Officials say it all started on Wednesday, April 10 at roughly 4:20 p.m. We’re told a St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Deputy and a State Trooper were called to the scene of a two-vehicle crash on I-49 near mile post 40.

The deputy arrived on scene first and claims that a naked man charged at him. It turns out the man was the driver who caused the minor crash.

Officials say Byron Simon, 22, of Ville Platte, ran to the deputy’s vehicle, got in, and became combative. At this point the trooper arrived on scene and witnessed the deputy struggling with the suspect. The trooper reportedly discharged his gun, but no one was struck or injured.

As the battle continued, the trooper was forced to pull out his taser to subdue Simon. They were then able to place him into custody. He was then transported to a local hospital for treatment of undisclosed injuries.

The driver of the vehicle that was struck during the crash sustained minor injuries and was treated at the scene.

Simon was cited for several charges related to the crash, including Operating a Vehicle While Intoxicated, Careless Operation, Operating a Vehicle with a Suspended License, No Seatbelt and Expired Inspection Sticker.

A sample of Simon’s blood is currently being analyzed at the State Police Crime Lab.

Unrelated to the crash, Simon was charged with Disarming of a Peace Officer, Simple Battery, Obscenity, Simple Burglary of an Emergency Vehicle, Battery on a Police Officer and four counts of Resisting a Police Officer. He was booked into the St. Landry Parish Prison.

The case remains under investigation at this time.
