ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI)– A controversial new plan that would eliminate the unaccredited Normandy and Riverview Gardens School Districts was presented to the Missouri State Board of Education Monday.
It calls for schools in unaccredited districts to be taken over by non-profit groups, which could run them however they like as long as they meet state and federal standards.
It is similar in many ways to charter schools, only these schools would be accountable to a state-run Office of Community Schools.
The state has been trying to find a solution for unaccredited schools that would end the need for the student transfer program.
The Normandy School District issued a written response:
“The Normandy School District is aware that the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) is reviewing and considering several proposals regarding solutions to address unaccredited school districts within the state.”
“As of yet, DESE has not provided a definitive plan of action for the Normandy School District. The proposal presented by the Cities for Education Entrepreneurship Trust or CEE-Trust to the Missouri Board of Education is just that – a proposal.”
“Until we receive notification about a definitive plan of action for the Normandy School District, we will continue to advocate for the sustainability of our schools with the state legislature, the governor and DESE to ensure our district remains operational and a viable entity for the 24 communities supported by our school system.”
A spokesperson for Riverview Gardens had no comment.
The proposal is one of several before the Missouri State Board of Education which will take public input on those ideas in St. Louis on February 4, and make a decision at its next meeting, February 18th.
