NORTH ST. LOUIS COUNTY, MO (KTVI) – After a homicide about a year ago, the North County Cooperative decided to dive into gang life in the area.

Since then they have arrested over a dozen violent offenders.

This all started with a homicide in September of 2015.

"We were looking for a couple of gangs in relation to a homicide in Pagedale and as a result of the investigation we just dove into the world of gangs here in Wellston, Pagedale and the western part of St. Louis city," said North County Cooperative Lt. Steve Runge.

In December of 2015 the shootings between these two gangs were at an all-time high.

Detectives with the North County Cooperative started connecting the dots and made a list of suspects.

One by one detectives started arresting gang members and checking them off the list.

Runge said they have heard that gang members are being told to stay out of areas they patrol.

"We just arrested a guy the other night on an armed robbery and we couldn’t find him for a while, so during his interview we asked him where he had been and he told us words out on the street is to stay out of Pine Lawn and Wellston because the cops are pretty thick," said Runge.

He said that is a good feeling.

"What's really nice is that the people that live in these neighborhoods are out on the porch, out on the streets having events, and they feel safe and they thank us for it," Runge said. "That’s pretty cool."
