JEFFERSON COUNTY, MO (KTVI) - Authorities are investigating the death of a 66-year-old woman in a house fire Wednesday morning. It occurred in the 600 block of Willman Road in northern Jefferson County. The property was located on the banks of the Meramec River.

Captain Brad Dickinson of the Eureka fire department said the fire began in a front bedroom. A passerby noticed the smoke and discovered flames about 9:25 am.

Once firefighters extinguished the flames they were able to get inside through the front door. That's where the victim's body was found. Eureka called in the state fire marshal and a fire investigator from the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department. The fire is not considered suspicious at this time; however, smoking may have been a factor. The home, considered a riverside clubhouse, is mounted on stilts.  It was damaged during the flooding in December and January last winter. Dickinson said it appeared the woman was living there by herself while she remodeled the property.
