ST. LOUIS - One child has died while another recovers in a hospital after a shooting in North City.
City police and the chief went to the hospital to check on the family while continuing to try and find answers.
After seeming to finally get out of the pattern of losing young children caught in the crossfires of bullets, police say they need support from the community-at-large.
The shooting happened on Euclid Avenue and Highland Saturday afternoon at around 1:45.
Police said the family was in a car. A mother and her three children were inside.
The shooter opened fire with what police believe was an assault rifle from an alleyway down the street.
The mother was injured, and the two children were shot. The third child is okay.
The family went to the hospital where 6-year-old David Birchfield III was pronounced dead.
Our partners at the Post-Dispatch took photos of the car riddled with bullets just before it was towed away.
Police said they do not believe the mother and children were the intended victims of this shooting.
The city of St. Louis saw a deadly summer with dozens of children being shot and killed.
Deputy Chief Ronnie Robinson said they are encouraging people to consider the lives of innocent bystanders.
The suspect could possibly have been in a beige or white vehicle.
