OVERLAND, MO (KTVI) - Most of us have childhood memories of Christmas trees surrounded by a train. But chances are you've not seen a railroad quite like this. Dan's Emerald Forest in Overland is a winter wonderland in miniature, with an elaborate train track system surrounding a tiny, intricate village.

This idea came about in the mid 90s when homeowner Dan Schmidt decided to do some renovations to his once childhood home. He had prior experience with garden railroads and decided to give it a try in his front yard. Year after year crowds grew, so he's been bringing holiday cheer ever since. The railroad village stays up year round in some capacity, with different looks for Fourth of July and Halloween. Around Christmas time, the village contains such features as:

  • Drive-thru movies
  • Christmas tree lot
  • Snowman competition
  • Super heroes' ski slope
  • Reindeer farm

In addition to this display out front of Emerald Forest, you can also enjoy a cup of hot chocolate and bonfire for warmth in the back of the home upon visiting.

Dan's Emerald Forest can be seen any night, weather permitting, starting this weekend and running until News Years. It's free to stop by and enjoy, although there's a donation bucket on display. Dan's Emerald Forest is located at 8851 Windom Ave. Overland, MO 63114.
