ALTON, IL (KTVI) – Eddie Sholar Sr., the owner of Fast Eddie’s Bon Air, died Wednesday morning as a result of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, Fox 2 News has learned. He was 61.
Sholar purchased the popular beer and burger restaurant from the Balaco family in 1981, when it was known just as “Bon Air.”
Sholar’s son, Eddie Jr., found his father in bed and unresponsive. The family called authorities at 10:55 a.m. Sholar Sr. was pronounced dead at his home just before 11:50 a.m.
A gun was recovered at the scene. Investigators also found a note inside the home with funeral instructions.
Routine toxicology studies will be performed.
The Sholar family has said it will continue to run Fast Eddie’s in tribute to Eddie Sholar Sr.
Funeral arrangements are still pending, but are being handled by Gent Funeral Home in Alton.
