ST. CHARLES, MO (KTVI) - Quick thinking by a St. Louis Post-Dispatch delivery man may have saved a St. Charles family from an overnight fire outside their second floor apartment.
He pounded on the family`s door until someone answered so he could get them out.
That delivery man was Todd Barrow, 49, from University City, is grateful he was at the right place at the right time to act.
This all happened about 2:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Fox Hill Apartments just off Highway 94.
Barrow tells us he was delivering a Post-Dispatch to an apartment in the complex when he noticed a glow outside an upstairs unit.
He says at first he thought it was just some Christmas lights.
But then he noticed flames and realized there was a fire.
That`s when Barrow says he just acted on instinct and ran upstairs to get the family out.
Thankfully, his efforts were successful.
A mother and her three teenage kids got out of the unit ok.
They then helped get other residents out.
One of those other residents started putting out the flames with an extinguisher before St. Charles fire crews arrived.
The fire crews took over when they got to the scene.
A total of 12 units were evacuated for about an hour.
25 residents were put in the back of ambulances to stay warm until they were allowed back in their units..
The fire and damage was pretty much contained to the area outside the one upstairs unit.
Only the mother and her three kids in the impacted apartment were forced to find somewhere else to stay.
The Red Cross helped them out.
A cause for the fire is still under investigation but fire officials tell me they do not believe the blaze is suspicious.
As for Barrow, he doesn`t consider himself a hero.
He`s just thankful that everyone is ok.
