ANNAPOLIS, MO (KTVI) –Many questions remain after an elderly woman fell from an Amtrak train in Iron County late Saturday night. What exactly happened is still very much a mystery. Did she fall or jump? Was it an accident? Nobody knows for sure.

The family that found the woman says her name Rosie and she was on her way from New York to Texas.

A local train enthusiast, Byron Ashlock, happened to be shooting video of Amtrak’s` southbound 21 train as it made its way through Annapolis around midnight. Little did he know something terrible was happening, out of view on the other side of the train.

According to Iron County Sheriff`s Department, it was around 2:00 Sunday morning when Amtrak personnel discovered that an elderly passenger had gone missing somewhere between Desoto and Poplar Bluff. They say they immediately contacted authorities, although Iron county Sheriff Roger Mebley says his office wasn`t notified until 7:00am, some seven hours after the passenger was lost.

It wasn’t until Sunday afternoon, around 2:30pm, that the Forshee family of Annapolis, walking back from a Father’s Day swim in a nearby creek, found a pile of jewelry along the tracks and knew something was wrong. They heard the sound of a woman’s voice and found the woman in the brush near a fence.

Emergency crews were rushed to the scene where they had to hack their way deep into the bushes to pull the woman out. According to the Sheriff Mebley, she suffered significant leg injuries from her fall and was flown to Mercy Hospital in St. Louis for treatment. There is no word on her condition.

Investigators tell me that Amtrak personnel did find a step stool in front of an open window on the train and that they believe she may have climbed up the ladder and jumped.

But people in Annapolis are skeptical. How does an elderly woman, who already had a bad hip, climb up and out a window on a train that is moving at nearly 50 mph? That`s one of many questions that still must be answered.

The train the woman was on is the Texas Eagle. It travels from Chicago to San Antonio. Deputies believe the woman was traveling alone.
