ST. LOUIS – As family and friends gathered Wednesday to remember a 7-year-old boy who died in a double shooting earlier in the week, St. Louis police announced they’d taken a person into custody in connection with the child’s death.

Fox 2 learned the suspect was arrested Wednesday morning at Prairie and W. Florissant Avenue. Police did not provide any additional information, citing an ongoing investigation.

Xavier Usanga and his sisters were playing in the backyard in the 3500 block of N. 11th Street when the shots rang out. An 18-year-old was also critically injured in the shooting. Usanga was the youngest of eight children and shot outside of his home in Hyde Park.

Xavier’s sister, 10-year-old Trinity, said she tried to save her brother’s life after the shooting.

“They dropped to the floor, like, behind the truck; the bullet went through him and grazed me,” she said.

Trinity said she used her hands to try and stop the bleeding.

“I pressed down on the thing where he got shot and I forgot to hold his nose and then I did mouth to mouth and then he took a breath and gasped and my sister also did CPR,” she said.

Xavier’s mother, Dawn Usanga, had a message for his killer, who is now in custody.

“You killed my son and I know you see him playing and I hope his smile will burn in your brain forever and you know killed my son,” she said.

The family has set up a GoFundMe page to help pay for funeral services and counseling services for the children.

Eleven children have been shot in the city of St. Louis since June.
