MAPLEWOOD, MO (KTVI) - An unusual video is released by Maplewood police of a crime caught on tape.  The video came from a man who got a dash cam for his birthday.  Now that camera could help police catch some car thieves. The video shows a car with its hood hanging off to the side while traveling west on Manchester.

The incident began minutes earlier at a Maplewood car dealership. Four men acted as if they wanted to buy a vehicle.  One got in a Grand Prix and began to drive away. The salesmen tried to stop him. Police Detective Kyle Heitman said, “One of his accomplices shoved the salesman into a nearby vehicle and they were able to flee the lot.” But, the suspects forgot to latch the hood.

The witness and his dash cam followed the stolen vehicle and discovered the driver had stopped and was trying to rip the hood from the car. After struggling with the hood, the man finally pulled the hood free but that would come back to haunt him. Detective Heitman said, “When the hood was either being ripped off the car it possibly damaged the engine components.”

The stolen car sped off at a high rate of speed but not for long, in seconds it broke down. The driver got out and hitched a ride with his accomplices.

The owner of the car dealership declined to be interviewed. Maplewood police hope someone knows who the suspect is and will call authorities.
