ST. LOUIS (KTVI) – St. Louis police are looking for a hit and run driver who left a 13-year-old girl injured Tuesday in North St. Louis.  The driver’s actions on the scene were both bizarre and mean according to witnesses.

The crash happened in the afternoon as children were returning home from school.  Witnesses say the victim and her sister stopped off at a store on the corner St. Louis Avenue and North Grand as they headed for the Herbert Hoover Boys and Girls Club, across Grand just up the street.

“I see ‘em every day,” Yvonne Woods said of her interactions with them in the store.  “Every day they come in here.”

Woods says the girls left and there was a commotion outside moments later.  A car had slammed into the 13-year-old.  Another woman from the store, Dinna Houston, was outside.

“She hit on the passenger side then flew up in the air and came down on the driver’s side.  She’s in the street and her sister’s saying, ‘Please! Get up!  Get up!’  So she did get up, walked over to this gate over here and collapsed at the gate.”

Witnesses say the car came screeching to a stop several yards down the street, a sign of speed according to those who say what happened.  Then the man driving got out with a pistol in his hand.

“He stopped up here at the corner,” Wood said. “Got out and looked at his car.  Never once thought about that little girl he hit.  Everyone seen him with the gun.  And he got back in the car and took off.”

Multiple witnesses said the girls were headed for the Boys and Girls Club, something they do daily while waiting for their mother to get off work.  A spokesperson for the club was unaware of the accident and would not comment.

Police were unable to produce numbers on all of the year’s pedestrian-involved accidents, but they said the most serious ones, the fatal crashes, show a disturbing trend.  Of thirteen that have taken place in St. Louis this year, nearly half, six to be exact, have seen the drivers run from the scene rather than stop and help.

“To take off like that and leave a thirteen year old on the street like that…it’s appalling. It’s disgusting,” Wood said.

The young woman in this crash suffered head, leg, and arm injuries and was taken to an area hospital. There’s been no word on her condition.

Police provided this description of the suspect:
