EAST ST. LOUIS – Authorities have confirmed the death of a Washington Park Police Officer, who fell from the Poplar Street Bridge Saturday evening.
44-year-old Ricardo Davis died from his injuries after falling around 50 feet from the bridge around 5 pm Saturday. He had been in a foot pursuit of 2 suspects from Washington Park on the bridge when he tried to jump from one bridge span to another thinking there was solid footing between the spans.
Two suspects are under arrest after a high-speed chase from Washington Park Illinois into East St. Louis on westbound I-64.
The Washington Park officers were chasing the suspects in a vehicle when it struck several vehicles on the Poplar Street Bridge. The suspect vehicle stopped, and the suspects fled on foot. Davis stopped and gave chase when he tried to jump from one bridge span to another.
EMS personnel on the scene said Davis suffering multiple fractures to his lower body, and he was transported to a St. Louis hospital for treatment.
Additional officers on the scene were able to capture the suspects.
Witnesses told Fox 2 that officers found drugs and guns in the suspect vehicle.
No word on charges.
An investigation is ongoing.
