SPANISH LAKE, MO (KTVI)-- St. Louis County Police are questioning a person of interest in a hit-and-run accident in Spanish Lake that left a two year old boy dead.

They have also recovered the vehicle they believe was involved in the accident.

It happened in the 5100 block of Redman Road Sunday night at about 8:00 P.M.

A speeding SUV hit Darion Griffin, 2, as he crossed the street in front of his grandmother`s house.  He was staying with his grandmother and her daughters because his mother was not feeling well.

One of his aunts, Shariea Evans, 17, was also hit.  She came home from a hospital Monday night on crutches, after trying to save her nephew from a hit-and-run driver.  She has a concussion and a broken toe.

Police found the white Dodge Durango Monday afternoon in the 4400 block of Carter in north St. Louis.

No one was inside, but they say damage to the car plus the description from witnesses has them confident they found the vehicle involved. There was no word whether that person of interest was the driver of the SUV.

You could see the agony in Shariea's face as she got of a car and lumbered into her home with the help friends and family.

She was still grief-stricken and sore, suffering from abrasions, a concussion, and a broken toe.

Her mother, Alexandria Goree, said Evans tried to jump in front of her nephew to protect him when the two at the foot of Goree`s driveway in the 1500 block of Redman as it was getting dark around 8:10 Sunday night.

Evans went into the house and laid down, clutching her nephew`s photo and sobbing.

"My daughter, she tried, she tried to jump in front of him. Those bruises, the broken toe, it will heal.  But she will forever hold Darrion in her heart and it`s something that she will have forever," Goree said.  "My grandson was killed instantly.  I tried, I tried ... I tried so hard to stop him from bleeding.  I did everything I possibly could to save my grandson.  It was too late."

Goree said the boy died in her arms.  She couldn`t fathom that the driver just kept going.

"You`re just a monster.  Whoever you are, you are a monster, to know that you hit my grandson and my daughter and you didn`t stop," Goree said.

Neighbors who don`t know the victims, dropped off food, paid their respects, and reiterated Goree`s concerns about the dangerous mix of kids and speeding cars in an area where the speed limit is ignored and there are no sidewalks.

Neighbors say speeding has long been an issue on their residential street, where the posted limit is 25 m.p.h.

"They fly up and down this street all the time.  Jenny and i talked about it numerous time.  We said a child is going to get killed on this street.  Sure enough, that`s what happened," cried neighbor Doe Miller.

"They use this street as a drag race, they fly up and down this street all the time," said  Jenny Karpinski, whose own son was hit by a speeding driver on Redman Road 20 years ago.

"We said a child is going to get killed on this street and sure enough that`s what happened," she said. "It was just a matter of time."

"Please  hug your child, keep them close, tell them you love them.  You never know.  You never know," Goree said sobbing.

The family planned to hold a vigil for Darrion Tuesday night at 7:30.
