On Sunday afternoon, May 22, a man arranged to meet with the suspect, who had responded to his Craigslist post about a car for sale. They met in the parking lot of a business near the intersection of St. James Road and Moro Road, in rural Edwardsville around 1:45 p.m.
The suspect, a young black male with short dreadlocks, arrived with an unknown female in what is believed to be a black Ford Mustang. The female was captured on the business’ surveillance system before the robbery.
The victim allowed the suspect into his vehicle, described as a silver 2006 Chevrolet, Monte Carlo with a high end sound system. After getting into the car, the suspect produced a handgun, pointed it at the victim, and ordered him out of the car.
The victim slapped at the handgun and the gun went off inside the vehicle. No one was struck. The victim fled from the Monte Carlo after the shot was fired, running back to the business, where a friend was parked in a second car.
The suspect fled the scene in the victim’s car and the victim and his friend pursued him. The suspect headed south to Illinois Route 159, then Buchta Road, and then southbound onto Interstate 255.
During the chase, the victim called 911. As the suspect got onto westbound Interstate 55/70, a Fairmont City Police Office attempted to stop the suspect. The suspect fled from the pursuing officer at over 100 mph, and due to safety concerns, the police officer terminated the pursuit.
The suspect continued west over the Popular Street Bridge and into St. Louis.
“Shockingly, the suspect is described by the victim as being very young, early teens possibly,” said Capt. Mike Dixon, Madison County Sheriff’s Office.
Surveillance photos show the suspect’s alleged accomplice. Dixon hopes her family will recognize her, and contact police before she ends up in even deeper trouble.
“It’s a very dangerous situation and I’m hoping somebody out there gives us a lead that tracks these people down,” Dixon said.
Anyone who recognizes the female with the suspect, or who has information related to this event should call 618-296-3000 (Anonymous Tip Line) or 618-692-0871 (Investigations).
