BRIDGETON, MO. (KTVI) – An attack by two dogs at the Riverwoods Park and Trail in Bridgeton prompted one officer to pull her gun to shoot one of those dogs.

Officer Sue Gibbons says two men were attacked by the dogs.  One suffered a bite on his arm, the other a bite on his leg.  When paramedics arrived she says the dogs were circling the victims who were unable to receive treatment.

“You have to protect people,” said Gibbons.  “I’m a dog lover, I didn`t want to shoot.”

She says after trying to chase the dogs away, the pit bull came after her.

“He gained speed and we had to get to those people so I drew my service revolver and I shot him,” said Gibbons.

The dogs ran off into the woods and St. Louis County Animal Care and Control officers were notified.

They brought two traps to try and catch the dogs.  As they were setting those traps, the dogs were spotted.

One of the officers said the dogs charged them from behind but they were able to use their pole catchers to capture them.

That officer said the dogs appeared to be well cared for but contained no identification.

The pit bull will be taken to the Webster Groves Animal Hospital for treatment and the terrier mix will be cared for by St. Louis County.

A decision on their future will be made after a 10 day waiting period.
