Timothy Going, 43, was here with members of the cross country team from Fairfield Community High School in Wayne County, Illinois. That’s near Mt. Vernon.
Police say Going set up a hidden camera in the bathroom of the student’s motel room at the Super 8 Motel on Route 159. The pictures were discovered in a much larger investigation swirling around Going back in Wayne County. Investigators there contacted Fairview Heights.
“They said that, ‘Hey this may have occurred in your town.’ Through our follow investigation we determined we had enough to pursue charges,” Fairview Heights Officer David Mason said.
It was May when prosecutors in Wayne County say a janitor at the Fairfield Community High School found a camera hidden in the girls’ locker room. Police were notified and they used school surveillance cameras to trace it back to Going.
A search was then conducted of his home. It was on his personal computer that images from the school locker room, and the Fairview Heights motel were found.
Parents say the entire episode makes you think that much more about who you’re trusting your kids with. Some, like Katie Hall who we spoke to in Fairview Heights, say it’s hard not to worry.
“All the time. It’s everywhere. You have to think of churches, daycare, everything. It’s hard to let your kids go anywhere,” she said. “You can’t trust anybody these days.”
Sheila Barr says she always felt the schools were her one safe place. She never worried about teachers and coaches before.
“Not if they work for the school. I guess I just expect them to look into it for me. If it’s the parks and stuff you never know, could be a dad or whatever so I might be more nervous about that, but usually not the school.”
She added, “It freaks me out. Especially since I have a daughter and it was a grown man. It just freaks me out.”
Police are just happy they nabbed their suspect before things got worse.
“The course of this investigation was pretty successful,” Mason said, “that we were able to get charges on somebody that could be an even bigger problem or nuisance. I hate to use the word predator, but could be an even bigger predator than we know him as.”
Going is on paid suspension with the school in Wayne County. He remains jailed on $250,000 bond.
